I Will Save You

“We only reveal what we want other people to know, right? It's like we create fictional characters for the public. And inside we're somebody totally different.” This relates to you doesn’t it? This quote is one of many quotes that are included in the young adult fiction book, I Will Save You, by Matt De La Peña. Matt De La Peña has also written the books Mexican Whiteboy, The Living, The Hunted, along with many other books. The book I’ve recently been reading, I Will Save You has brought so much life back to reading for me. I couldn’t drop that book because the moment I stopped reading from it was the moment a new surprising cliffhanger came along. This is what the book was all about.

Kidd Ellison is struck with a hard life to keep up with. His mother loves him and tries to keep him safe from his abusive father that mistakes love for his fists. Kidd becomes post traumatic after an incident that changes who he is. He comes upon meeting a former surfing star, Mr. Red that usually comes to the Horizons to give a hand on helping Kidd with the problems he’s had with his family and his friend, Devon. Kidd goes to a campsite in Cardiff in which where he starts working for Mr. Red and starts looking up to him as a father figure. Later on, Kidd meets this girl named Olivia and they quickly start developing a close friendship. Once everything seems to be going well, Devon decides to come back into Kidd’s life. The old problems return and Kidd does the unthinkable.

Matt De La Peña made anyone relate to this book. This book does not only include a lot of messages, but it makes you think about everything in life. He fulfills everything a great book needs. It makes you realize how much you can relate to something that you really thought you couldn’t ever relate to. This book is filled with many big and emotional moments. Once you start reading it, you can’t let go of it. I would recommend this book to anyone. Especially to the people that like to have surprising and jaw breaking endings.
