The Outsiders: Book to Movie Comparison

There is a plethora of similarities between the novel and the movie of The Outsiders. For instance, a similarity between both the novel and movie is that they both began in the same way. Ponyboy was writing in his diary and he began writing down, “When I stepped out into the bright sunlight from the darkness of the movie house, I had only two things on my mind: Paul Newman and a ride home.” In addition, when Johnny was in the hospital, in both the movie and novel they acted out Johnny passing out when he responded to the nurses that for his mom to leave him alone. Moreover, before Johnny passed away, he called Ponyboy and told him to “Stay gold”. Those were his last words to Ponyboy in both the movie and novel.

Although, there is also some differences that were in movie and some that were in the novel. Like so, when the novel began, Ponyboy was about to get all his hair cut off by the Socs. But in the movie, it starts off with Ponyboy, Johnny, and Dally chasing after some kids that were playing cards. While in the novel, the Greasers were part of the poor east side and the Socs were part of the wealthy west side. They changed things up in the movie, the Greasers were part of the poor north side and the Socs were part of the wealthy south side. Also, when Ponyboy got real late to his house in the novel, Darry slaps him. On the other hand in the movie, Darry just pushes him to floor. When this all occurred Ponyboy just ran away with Johnny.

In spite of all these similarities and differences, I feel like the movie adaptation did not stay true to the novel. They made so many more differences to the movie, which didn't really get my attention anymore. They changed so many parts and they didn't really fulfill the imaginations I had in my mind. To also answer the second question, I feel like the directing and acting crew just rushed the whole movie. It really didn't successfully succeed on how I wanted and thought of it to be. When the movie barely started they at least skipped two chapters. When watching the movie, it seemed like they just wanted to get straight to the message of the story. Overall, I feel that this movie was pretty good, but they could've made it a little more better.
