Outsiders Going Beyond the Book: Making Connections
Reading the article, Herd Behavior made me come upon these connections to the book our class recently finished reading, The Outsiders. It made me realize not only how similar the main character Ponyboy was, but the whole Greasers group. Adding onto that, it also made me realize that both the article and The Outsiders book brought some insight to the same theme. That theme was that everybody would follow the group's behaviors. They wouldn't just focus on them, if it involved one of their group members it would involve everyone else part of the group.
The article Herd Behavior states, “All of the animals band closely together in a group and, in panic mode, move together as a unit. It is very unusual for a member of the herd to stray from the movement of the unit.” (Paragraph 1) Throughout the story, no matter what happened, the Greasers always stayed together through everything. All the rough times they went through, they fought those times and got passed them. And all those good times, they all enjoyed them together as a group. According to the article, “When herd behavior sets in, an individual person’s judgment and opinion-forming process shuts down as he or she automatically follows the group’s movement and behavior.” (Paragraph 2) This connects to The Outsiders because no matter how Ponyboy felt about fighting against like groups like the Socs, he would always join and fight with them because he always followed on what the Greasers did. Connecting back to the theme this shows how it didn't matter how Ponyboy felt about fighting other groups. He was still going to fight them no matter what because it was what his group (the Greasers) decided.
In conclusion, the Greasers stuck together throughout the whole story. They never broke their bonds and they kept it real with each and every one of each other. I liked this book, it was overall good. When I read the article on herd behaviors, it showed me how much of a loyal group the Greasers were/are to each other. No other group in the story of The Outsiders had the same bond as the Greasers. I feel like if it wasn't for all those people that were there for Ponyboy, he wouldn't have been where he was. I get that some of his closest friends ended up dying and it brought him down, but he probably would've been in a worse place if it wasn't for his whole group being there for him.
